How should I review my I-589 before an asylum interview?
Last reviewed: August 31, 2026
General information only. Review should help you understand your own filed record, not memorize scripted answers or manufacture consistency.
Review the exact version that was filed, including continuation pages and attachments. Do not rely on a blank current form or a reconstructed copy. The purpose is to understand your own record and identify genuine questions—not to memorize scripted answers.
Work section by section. Verify names, A-number, addresses, family members, immigration history, prior applications, travel, dates, organizations, arrests or detentions, and the factual narrative. Compare repeated facts with the declaration and supporting evidence.
Make a short issue list for anything that appears incomplete, uncertain, translated differently, or inconsistent with a source record. Do not erase the old version or change evidence. If a correction or update may be needed, ask a qualified representative how it should be handled.
USCIS advises applicants to bring a copy of the submitted I-589 and supporting documents to the interview and to bring required original identity documents and other evidence identified in the interview instructions. Review the notice shortly before the appointment because procedures can change.
