Can I submit additional evidence before an asylum interview?
Last reviewed: August 31, 2026
High-volatility procedure. USCIS submission methods and interview procedures can change. Verify the current interview notice and asylum-office instructions before taking action.
Yes. USCIS allows applicants to provide additional evidence before an affirmative asylum interview, but timing and delivery method matter. Current USCIS guidance says additional evidence should generally be submitted at least five business days before the interview. Evidence can also be submitted before an interview is scheduled. If the application was filed online, USCIS directs applicants to upload additional evidence through the existing USCIS online account; for paper-filed cases, follow the instructions of the asylum office handling the case.
Start by preserving the original record and creating a clearly named working copy. Add the item to your evidence index with its date, source, language, and the issue or incident it relates to. If a foreign-language document requires an English translation, keep the original-language document together with the complete translation and translator certification.
Do not wait until the last moment simply because the evidence is new. USCIS warns that material submitted fewer than five business days before the interview may delay case processing. Check the interview notice and current local asylum-office instructions.
If the new item changes or conflicts with something already stated in the I-589, declaration, or prior evidence, do not alter old records to make them match. Flag the difference for legal review and explain it truthfully if asked.
